1919 Air Race Exhibition at the Airways Museum
Open Day

Eleven Thousand Miles to Australia: Vimy G-EAOU in the Great 1919 England-Australia Air Race
is the theme of a photographic exhibition unveiled at the 2019 Open Day at the Airways Museum on Sunday 24 November 2019.

The year 2019 is the centenary of the great 1919 England-Australia Air Race. Winners of the race were the crew of the converted First World War Vickers Vimy bomber, G-EAOU: Sir Ross Smith, his brother Sir Keith Smith, and mechanics Wally Shiers and Jim Bennett. Together, this crew made the first ever flight from England to Australia and, indeed, made the first ever international arrival by air. Our exhibition covers this epic and historic journey in images sourced from several collections, including the CAHS collection, the National Library of Australia collection and the State Library of South Australia collection.
